and Ercole got to DJ for a while...

So I got to play some volleyball too!

We will create a yearbook with all of the pictures to keep at the volleyball structure. I will try to make good on my promise to post my mix in the next couple of days.

Merry Faerie

Today I noticed a new link to us from Queer Merry Faeries' web site. Theirs is a very beautiful site, with a lot of inspirational content. I am looking forward to having something new to browse.

I am very glad that we are listed on the various Radical Faerie web site listings out there. We have met a few new friends through casual visits to our site directed from the lists. Although the casual visitor may not find our site particularly Fae, on the surface. We are happy to contribute or connection to the faerie family that does exist here, on the Big Island of Hawaii. We have offered our accommodations to those crossing the island (being half way between the two airports has its advantages,) and we have always felt as much contribution in return as our hospitality warrants, from our guests. Faeries love the Faggot Flower Farm.

The numerous people that we have met through connection to the Radical Faeries, and our time with Harry and John, guide our conceptualizations of Our Queer Family, and my personal understanding of my perception's connection to the universe and connection to the other perceptions whom I share it with.

Getting more done

Well, Tolver's thumb injury is healing, and even though he's been to the dentist three times in the last two weeks, and had at least that many teeth pulled, he's been going crazy to get back to work. So we made another trip to Homo Despot, and we've made some more progress on the new room.

Add a coat of paint, and things start to really look like they are coming together.

Now we have to wait for delivery of the sliding glass door to finish the final exterior wall. In the mean time, we'll get the wiring done.

Nice Tush!

Today though, we got sidetracked by BUGS! More precisely, a yet to be identified moth has been laying eggs all over the pincushion flower buds. It does not seem to be the Apple Moth that has restricted the export of plants from the island (another pest that we have to be on the look out for) but it will probably be another problem at the point of inspection (we allready have to watch out for ants.)

And, thanks to God of Biscuits (who has linked to us since the Blog was called "Tolver's Mind"), I (Reese) was directed to the "Which Tarot Card Are You" internet quiz...

You are The Hierophant

Divine Wisdom. Manifestation. Explanation. Teaching.

All things relating to education, patience, help from superiors. The Hierophant is often considered to be a Guardian Angel.

The Hierophant's purpose is to bring the spiritual down to Earth. Where the High Priestess between her two pillars deals with realms beyond this Earth, the Hierophant (or High Priest) deals with worldly problems. He is well suited to do this because he strives to create harmony and peace in the midst of a crisis. The Hierophant's only problem is that he can be stubborn and hidebound. At his best, he is wise and soothing, at his worst, he is an unbending traditionalist.

What Tarot Card are You?
Take the Test to Find Out.

Tar Baby

People are people, and they are just as screwed up here as they are back there. No need to go into details, but suffice to say that our 'Age Peer Group' has a set of problems that we just have to roll our eyes at. And our 'Emotional Peer Group' doesn't party as much as we are used to. (Time to build some bridges.) So it looks like the Island is going to give us a slower lifestyle, but in the end analysis it is still a lot better than where we were headed back there.
Don't get us wrong, we dearly loved living in San Francisco, and we miss our friends back there almost more than we can stand, sometimes. But the life we have built for ourselves here is ultimately more secure and satisfying. Back there we were just 'keeping the party going', while here we are 'creating beauty in paradise' with each flower plant we put into the ground.
Time to grow up we suppose, we can't party forever and still live to a happy old age. When did THAT happen? We were supposed to stay 21 forever and the party was supposed to never end. But at least we survived with all our fingers and toes, and we have the memories. Everybody should be so lucky.

John Burnside's 90th Birthday Party

A friend from San Francisco sent me a link to his video of the Radical Faeries celebrating John Burnside's 90th birthday. John Burnside, Harry Hay's surviving partner, continues to be a centering figure for the faeries in San Francisco. I truly miss Saturday tea where many of us would come together to reset ourselves from the previous week. 'Faerie Coffee', as it was called when I started going, still goes. See: California, San Francisco entry on http://www.radfae.org/localcircles.htm

The video gave me glimpses of some of those wonderful people who I miss so much, and it made me cry a little, in a good way. I have to remember something that one of them said to me the day before Tolver and I jumped off the mainland for Hawai'i: "Is it so easy for you to leave us all behind?" No, it was not, and will never be easy to follow where the universe leads. I love you and miss you all dearly. Still, it is quite evident that we ended up where we were supposed to be, so I cannot regret what I had to leave behind.

Sending out big hugs to all my peeps in SF!

Wig Volleyball 2007 Postgame

Wow that was fun.

So we got to DJ all ten hours of Wig Volleyball, plus VJ after dark. Definately our best party on the island so far, and a nice way to finish our first year here. Thank you to everyone who came out and showed their appreciation of the Banana Boyz and their farm. And to everyone who reads our blog: The Banana Boy'z Isle of You farm is the place to come visit! http://isleofyou-hawaii.com

Here are the early pictures; with more to come.

the Isle of You Farm

I have written of volleyball with da Banana Boyz a few times. Volleyball is itself the premiere queer event on Big Island, the yearly fundraiser adds an after dark party with fire dancers, food, music, and the Miss Big Girl contest, along with a LOT of sillyness, fun and play. The funds go directly to support upgrades at the volleyball and party space at the Isle of You farm.

Raj and Jokie were here!

Our good friends Raj and Jokie X Wilson were a couple of lucky blokes, and got to tour the islands on the Pride of Hawaii, a cruise ship that floats like a luxery hotel from island to island, stopping during the day to allow its paasengers to come ashore. They made it to our island twice, once for each side, since it SOOOO big... We met them at the Kona pier around 9am, and zipped them back to the flower farm for a tour, and of course took them to our beach at the end of the road to the sea.

What a treat, to see two of our favorite faeries here in our new home. Unbeknownst to us there was a high surf advisory Friday, thus the surf was the highest we had ever seen it. Nonetheless we hopped into the water and rode the waves. (Our island friends were impressed that we swam in 8 foot waves and were not swept out to sea.) And we took them to the tide pool where Jokie and Tolver adorned goggles to view the fishies, who are so friendly as to come up and nibble on offered toes and fingers.

We only had a few hours to spend with our friends from afar, so we made the most of it, and then bid a tearful goodbye as we dropped them back at the boat. We are sure that this will be but the first of our faerie friends to visit us here in our new home. And each of our friends that visits will be treated to just as royal an experience as the first, for here as there, We will always enjoy playing host to the festivities.

Tolver.

party season, isn't it...

For many years we participated in the party season that spanned the end of May through mid September in San Francisco. There's something going on there every weekend during the summer from street fairs to leather bears! So far the party has been a bit far inbetween, here on the island. A lot of what fun is is made ourselves, and I am pretty good at having a good time on my own; I would like to find more here at which to apply myself.

We got to participate in a public party thrown by a fire dance troupe trying to make enough money to go to Burning Man this year. I actually invited myself, on the advice that they would appreciate my projector, and got a very enthusiastic response to the idea of my showing up and being the VJ. So I showed up with my gear and while warming up the video, I turned on some music to help with sound check, but then the sound guy took off and I ended up being the DJ for 2 hours because nobody else knew how to hook into the guy's amp. Now I love getting to be DJ, when I've had a chance to prepare a playlist, at least! Two hours of off the cuff music was harried but rewarding.

I continued to do visualization once the other DJs took over, and towards the end of the fire dancer's performance some of them wanted to do shadow dancing between my projected visualization and the screen. The effect was really cool, as I was able to see the fire dancers through the screen with the viz and the shadow dancers on top.

That was Friday night, and afterwards we went down to the cliffs at the ocean and watched the ocean at night; even more cool.

Today was July the 4th, and we went to Kalani for the party. It was great to finally get to see the place. It is quite beautiful, and literally right across the red road from the ocean. We didn't stay long though, my travelling companions were in fuddy-duddy mode.

My favorite blogger had some harsh words for the holiday
Proceed at your own risk
maybe that has something to do with the general mood today... sigh.

hugs

Volleyball

On Saturdays we drive 90 miles across a beautiful stretch of southern big Island, to the Isle of You farm, for naked volleyball. It is the premiere queer event on the island. Each week, for four to five hours, a couple dozen of us guys hang out, eat munchies, and otherwise imbibe, and play some good old fashion volleyball.

I have never been accused of being athletic, and I had no real experience at the game before coming to Hawaii. Each weekend, I have played. At first I would only play the first game or two of the day, before it gets competitive. Yet, the more I play the more I want to play, and lately I have been playing through the whole afternoon. Lately, many in the group have been complimenting me, and telling me that I am become a much better player than I was at the start. I really appreciate this guys, and I want you to know that you've helped me a lot. Just keep telling me what to do, and I'll get it!

The game is very much about teamwork. In fact, it seems that what is most fun about the game for eveyone, is when we can keep a volley going for a long time. It becomes less important that one side make a point, and more important that we can keep the ball in the air and keep it going.

It was a beautiful sunny day, and we played hard. I'm sore this morning, but its a good sore!

The picture is from a fund-raiser event that happened before we got here, called "Wig Volleyball". We don't usually wear the wigs, but you get the idea!
