Marcel

We've had quite a busy weekend here, as we got prepared for a new addition to the household. We have rescued another poodle. Dad had a poodle named Max from puppy to big rock in the back yard. Ever since Max's death he has wanted another poodle, however they can be hard to come by on the islands (you can't just bring one in from the main land without going through months of pre-medical, then quarantine, at a cost of thousands of dollars (this is why Tolver and I didn't even try to bring a cat, but it means that there is no rabies on the island.) An alternative is to bring in an animal from another rabies-free country, like Australia, but it still ends up costing quite a bit. There are a couple of poodle breeders on Oahu, so we were always on the look-out. Max was a "red" poodle, and Dad had had his heart set on the new poodle being black, and he would name him Mozart.

Well, about a year ago, an acquaintance from the social group died, and we rescued his very old black toy poodle, Lakshmi, which we just called Muppet, because she looked like an really old, threadbare, muppet doll. Lakshmi must have been 16 or 17 years old; she was almost completely blind, and covered in tumors. We gave her lots of love, and a paradise to live in for her final few weeks, but she was old and tired, and expired after just a few weeks.

So we kept looking. Last week, Tolver found the ad on Craigslist for Marcel, a white male poodle on Oahu. The owners were very elderly, yet Marcel was only 2 and a half years old (apparently he was the third Marcel. The owners were being moved into a nursing home, and their children had taken Marcel to the pound to be destroyed. Luckily, for everyone, a rescue worker (Lorie pictured with Marcel below) at the pound decided Marcel should be placed instead (Thank You Lorie!) So, Dad went over to Oahu for the day, and came home with Marcel last night.

Whew! He seems to be integrating into the family very well. He is very friendly and definitely likes to snuggle with people. He and Makua (our rat terrier) are quickly becoming friends. Molly (the only girl in the house, a carne terrier) is grumbling, and trying to make sure that her position as queen has not been usurped by the new prince in the house.

The Austin Pendleton vibe

I found it interesting that we have been having a bit of synchronicity around the house involving Austin Pendleton.
First we came across a wonderful movie from 1968, called Skidoo (well actually just a clip in which Jackie Gleason is accidentally dosed with LSD by counterculture activist the Professor, played by Austin Pendleton, bald and with a mustache.) The clip led to looking for the movie, which led to Tolver saying that the actor looked like Sony Bono. I knew that it was not Sonny Bono, but had to go looking for Austin's name (he is not credited on IMDB for Skidoo, making the search a little more difficult.) Upon finding Austin, along with more recent pictures of him, we realized that he was also in Capote which we just watched the other night (kinda boring, but an interesting portrait of Truman,) and he is in The Owl and the Pussy Cat which happens to be next up in our Netflix Queue.
Do I sense a psychic alignment, possibly leading up to a lifetime achievement award?

Blog Stats

The number of hits to the blog has had quite an up-swing lately; like three times the hits per day, as compared to just three months ago. Sure, that means it went from 4 hits a day to 12, but still!

So the most of you will have come to our blog from a Goggle image search for "Nude Sailors" or "Gay Sailors". Second most popular is Zombie Jesus, also from a Goggle image search. Third most popular is actually the picture of Tolver painting the house naked (Search term "nice tush".)

It is kind of cool to be able to scan the often completely irrelevant search terms that lead browsers to our site, like: Walmart Sandels, or my favorite "cock my boy blog".

I guess I'll never be abducted by aliens...

now that I've had my anal probe, "willingly"...
Well I survived; don't remember a thing... Just really glad to be over that head-ache (which increased to migraine proportions a couple of times,) and glad that my tummy is full (we went to Ken's Pancake House and I had a wonderful Belgium waffle with scrambled eggs and bacon, the perfect breakfast.)

They found nothing. I have a perfectly healthy colon! My fears of insurance conspiracies are confirmed through circumstantial evidence! Sigh.

I'm gonna go find some more food.

the headache

I guess most of the world's caffiene addicts have dealt with the skull throbbing, ear ringing, headache that goes along with skipping a day of that drug, or the two to three weeks of it that come with swearing off. In preperation for my penetration, I'm on a clear fluids only fast for the next 32 hours, so no coffee, or Coca-cola. Unfortunately I'm also not allowed aspirin, ibuprophen, or even my daily multi-vitamin.

The head aches.

Hunger turns to nausea.

The doctors are making me feel sick.

On top of that, I have to spend the day clling around to make sure that all of the ducks are in a row with the insurance.

Katie Couric did it, so can I

Hip Hooray, Yippee, I get to have a Colonoscopy!
So I go in to see the doctor, to get a check up and establish history; now that I have some insurance, I should actually use it. Since I'm 40 now, they like to do the whole finger up the butt thing; in the vigilant search to find cancer. Well, blood in the stool, even the tiniest hint of such, could mean bowl cancer. Gasp!
Or, it could mean that, my insurance will pay for it if they refer me to their friend who'll send them a cut, all I have to do is deal with a couple of days of discomfort, and possible death, and as a bonus they might detect a nasty disease for which they can charge my insurance even more to treat. What a treat!
Needles to say, I'm a bit stressed this week.
I guess I can admit to being somewhat un-nerved by the chance of cancer, although I think I have been sufficiently desensitized by the media to that fear. I am more stressed by the re-kindling of all of my reservations about the medical establishment of our society, and how quick to cynicism I am, as demonstrated above. (Not quite paranoid-delusional enough to think that the doctor stuck the cancer bug up there during the exam.) Such disallusionmnt and reservations have meant that I have only seen a doctor like twice in the last 15 years. I have no use for them. You get sick, you take better care of yourself until you get better. Luckily, I've never broken a bone.
SO... Tuesday I get to fast, and use the drano, then Wednesday, we drive to Hilo for the anal probe. We'll post the video on Thursday. NOT!

O yeah, and for all of the random people who will browse by here looking for nude sailors from Google images this week: hows that for getting more than you asked for! heh.

Kona-side, Kailua town

Caught up in the whirlwind... A couple of weeks ago, I noticed a post up on Tribe promoting an all day event Kona-side. We haven't played much on the Kona side of the island, but now we have some good friends living over there, so we've been making an effort to dredge up the Kona scene, and begin to look to it for more than just the monthly shopping trip. So, I fired off an email to the Promoter to see if they would be interested in my VJing talents.

The gig was this past Friday; sorry I didn't post anything before hand (not that I have any local readers) but the location was to stay undisclosed until the day of, and I wasn't really sure of what I was getting myself into. Being totally ignorant of the Kona-side scene, and having never met anyone involved, except for online, I was treating it like what it was: an internet hook-up! Maybe I was a bit too cautious; maybe the promoter was a bit too cautious. Because, while there was advertisement, and the eventually disclosed location was really good (the old Kona Airport pavilion) the all-day event (I VJed from 1pm to 9pm) was poorly attended.

The setup was really great, it sounded great, the DJs were great. The location, the old airport pavilion, is a great open air space. But, nobody showed up. Most of the day there were more people standing in the parking lot than inside. And it was daylight for most of it, so I spent a lot of time projecting black and white, just to be visible. And the wind kept blowing down the screens... Sigh...

Well, it turns out that the same guy promoting that event was presenting DJ Garth from San Francisco, at a Kona-side club, the next night, last night. So, he asks if I want to project for that gig as well. Duh, YEAH! So, after an 8 hour gig on Friday, we schlepped our way back to Kona-side, for another 4 and a half hour gig, Saturday night.

Definitely worth it. The Mixx Bistro is obviously a very "mixed" bar. The "bar" is just a little foyer to the expansive patio. It was a cloudless night, and the Js were setup on a raised section above the dance floor, and I was projecting behind them. The first DJ, Sherman (Kona/Seattle) was really good, I liked his grooves, and then Garth came on and stepped it up four or five notches! While I may have felt a little ignored during the run (only one person offered to buy me a drink, event though a dozen asked me what Garth was drinking,) the feedback afterward made up for it.

We met some new people, made some connections, stirred up some buzz. Fun stuff!
