ReeseTV bandwidth...

It has come to my attention that I have a couple of hurdles to cross yet with the implementation of ReeseTV. One, as expected, is bandwidth. We all need more bandwidth. Actually our servers have enough bandwidth to handle most of the load except for some of the larger files. I have tried to keep the streaming requirements down on the video files, but I am having some problems with the Flash animations.

While Flash can be a very light-weight delivery mechanism, many of the more interesting ones are still 3-7mb. ReeseTV uses the Windows Media Player control on its web page for rendering the playlist. WMP will stream WMVs perfectly, however its support for Flash (swf) is maybe not so complete. I have noted that the "pre-loaders" on most flash do not work (the little bar indicating how much you have to download before you can start playing), so it can be hard to tell if it is loading, broken, or just stuck. Put that together with slow loading, and most people will get frustrated and move on...

So, I'll be working on that this week. Until then, you will just have to wait and see what will happen! On a standard DSL it shouldn't take more than 3 minutes for any one animation to load.

Onward through the fog.
